In a world where cybercrime is on the rise and mission-driven boards are facing huge challenges in achieving their goals. Effective communication and a strong relationship between board members are therefore critical to ensuring the long-term success and longevity of an organization.

The increasing focus on cybersecurity and the increasing demands of regulators place the burden on board secretaries, general counsels and chief information security officers (CISOs) to improve board member communications. Despite their best efforts, many governance experts struggle to keep communication between board members organized and secure. This is why it’s not common for sensitive internal governance communications to be sent through insecure communication channels — such as personal email — putting organizations at risk of security breaches and regulatory penalties.

It is vital that CISOs implement board-management solutions that allow for private and group communication, and collaboration. This includes using a board portal software that is mobile-friendly and easy to use. It also requires leveraging video tools for conferencing that can facilitate secure and reliable virtual meetings. Instant messaging platforms and collaboration tools for documents are also crucial to facilitate efficient and productive interactions between board members.

CISOs must also present their reports in a business-like way to the board to convey the importance of cybersecurity to the bottom line. For example, instead of declaring that there is a high chance of a breach, say that it could cost the company X dollars. This helps to make the issue more concrete and creates a more productive conversation around how to proceed.
